America is no stranger to mass shootings. There have been several high profile mass shootings in recent years often by young mentally disturbed young men, to remind you of a few recent mass shootings there was the Newtown Connecticut mass shooting in December of 2012 where 20 year old Adam Lanza killed 28 people including his mother, the Orlando shooting in June 2016 where 29 year old Omar Mateen killed 49 people and now the most recent mass shooting happened just a few days ago in Las Vegas during a music festival when 64 year old Stephen Paddock opened fire from his hotel room killing 58 people and injuring more than 515 others.
Why did a wealthy real estate investor shoot and kill so many people?
It would seem that having money and success does not bring happiness. The reasons why Stephen Paddock shot and killed so many people are still unknown and police are still investigating. The shooters brother told the Orlando Sentinel, “We are completely dumbfounded. We can’t understand what happened”. The shooters girlfriend who was in the Philippines and is considered a person of interest has flown back to the US where she is due to be questioned by police. According to bbc.com “Reports said Paddock transferred $100,000 (£75,400) to her in the Philippines before Sunday’s shooting.”
Stephen Paddock the Las Vegas mass shooter had 23 guns in his possession in his hotel room. This brings into question the constant debate of gun laws in America that allow people to have access to so many high calibre firearms. How many more shootings will it take before the US government makes greater strides to restrict access to firearms as they are dangerous?
